In Phase I of the Ph.D. Completion Project 27 institutions submitted data representing 279 Ph.D. programs. Among these programs, there were 10 areas in which 10 or more institutions are represented, with another 11 areas for which there were five or more institutions represented. This density of programs and the variety of institutions represented ensured that the data collected was useful for purposes of benchmarking.
